Along the shores of the Tambopata River deep in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, you’ll find yourself amongst the most impressive display of biodiversity on Earth. Here, at Camino Verde’s Living Seed Bank, we collect seeds. Seed banks are genetic stockpiles that safeguard the future of important plants by preserving and reproducing their seeds. As its name suggests, our seed bank is alive, contained within living trees we’ve propagated and planted on 10 hectares (25 acres) of land previously deforested for agriculture. The Living Seed Bank represents 280 tree species and is home to 15,000 trees. We focus on planting threatened and endangered species in large numbers to ensure a healthy source of diverse genetic stock from which to draw seeds continually into the future. As wild populations dwindle and suffer genetic erosion, our work ensures that these rare species have a future. Throughout the entire Amazon rainforest, this is the only project of its kind. This is both a reforestation project and a conservation project. But also, it's a source of seeds for indigenous communities throughout the Amazon, as well as a blueprint for designing sustainable, economically viable agroforestry systems. We freely share seedlings propagated at our on-site plant nursery with our partners in over twenty forest farming communities. Together, we plant fruit, timber, medicinal, and other useful tree species in mixed agroforestry systems based on successful models we developed in the Seed Bank. Our seeds provide our partners with a sustainable income and promote stewardship of the forest-- all while simultaneously rehabilitating land cleared for illegal mining, agriculture, and cattle ranching. So far, we’ve planted over 10,000 trees our Living Seed Bank, including over 70 different fruit species, 40 ornamental flowering species, and more than half of the region’s top 30 timber species. If we're able to meet our funding goals, we will be able to reforest one hectare (a thousand trees) each year for the next five years. Each hectare we plant protects the most bio-diverse region on Earth, supports sustainable livelihoods for the Amazon’s indigenous caretakers, and ensures the survival of rare and beautiful species that may otherwise be lost forever.
